{The Ordinary Moments 16} #31 ‘A Little Blog Refresh’

I don’t know about anyone else but as soon as I have finished decorating one room in my house, I immediately want to change another one. I get bored quite easily and often fancy a change, although of course unfortunately we can’t constantly keep changing the rooms in our home. The same goes for my blog, I often want to change things, to tweak things and to add new bits and bobs, but at the same time I am aware that too much change isn’t a good thing. We all like familiarity.

My blog was completely redesigned a year or so ago. I went from the most awful un-user friendly blog platform called joomla and switched to wordpress. My lovely husband (who is handy to have around as he is a designer and developer) spent literally a week transferring, sorting and re-developing my blog behind the scenes, which was a mammoth job, to basically what you still see now. A couple of weeks ago I finally transferred hosts, after experiencing far too much downtime with my previous one. This then made me finally decide to have a little refresh of my blog as I needed to update things to include our baby boy.

For so long I have debated changing my blog name. I still absolutely hate the name Mummy Daddy Me, but I also think I have spent five years building up this blog and this name, and so it would be really silly to change it. However I wanted to make my blog a little more ‘me’, although we are a family blog, I also have a lot of other passions, including travel, interiors, design and photography, and I wanted to make my blog feel a little more grown up, even though it still has the ‘Mummy’ connotation in the name. My children are still tiny, so I don’t feel the need to change it, after all being a Mummy is still the most important thing in the world to me, and I can just write about what I want under this name anyway. I loved my current clean design, it is easy (I hope) to read and navigate. Therefore I saw no need to change the overall style of my blog, (if it aint broke don’t fix it and all that) but I decided last week to take it offline for a couple of days and have a little refresh of some key aspects.

The first main thing you will notice is I have changed my logo and colour scheme. While I loved my old logo, our little family photo, I was never massively keen on my colour scheme of burgundy, pink and grey. I also found that my illustration felt a bit too cutesy and babyish for how I am currently feeling. As a family we absolutely love bright primary colours, from the interior of our house to the clothes we wear, and so I wanted my blog to reflect this more.

I decided on the yellow, red and mint colour scheme after taking inspiration from the below photos from a recent holiday to Majorca. These are my favourite colours and are just so much more ‘us’.

We then set about creating a new logo and after going back and forth for ages, I decided I just wanted it to be really simple to let my photos do the talking, while still maintaining a bit of a fun factor- after all this is a family blog. I love the final one my husband designed, my main passions are photography and travel and I think you can look at the logo and pretty much tell what we are all about. It’s simple, more ‘grown up’ but still ‘me’ and that is what I wanted.

Travel is such a huge part of this blog and our family life, so I wanted to really emphasise that a little more in my new refresh. The main things I have done is added a new introductory travel page ‘our family wanderlust’ which I am really pleased with and Jon has also created me a interactive travel map of the places which we have been, which I just LOVE. I love that this will help showcase our little adventures more. (The map is best viewed on a desktop)

I then of course needed to make sure I added our baby boy to all the pages, as he previously wasn’t included on there. I’ve refreshed our about page and updated the photos and words. In fact I have pretty much updated all my pages- including our questions page, our contact us page, our hire us page and our favourite photography page. I also really love our little films page, as all my videos are listed there in chronological order and I am really massively getting into making videos at the moment. If you are a regular reader you will notice that I have also changed the typography on the homepage as well, I just wanted something a little less bold and a little more clean looking and subtle. I’ve also made quite a lot of the pages with full width images.

I wanted to completely change our ‘work with us’ page as I have done so many amazing things with brands that I want to shout about, but I found my previous page quite hard to read and navigate as I crammed so much onto the page. We created a grid with the brand logos, and if you click on them you go to separate pages listing what I have done with that brand. This was the most time consuming of all (bar the travel map) and it is still not completely done as I have other things I want to add, but I hope that this way is a bit more user friendly and really showcases some of the amazing opportunities we have had.

Finally I’ve been going back and forth for months about whether I should put our children’s names on this blog. Jon (I’m using his name too now!) has never seen a problem with it but for so many years I didn’t, because I was worried mainly about their digital footprint in terms of friends googling their names when they got older. However I also have had a realisation that this blog is such a huge part of our lives, and I hope they will be proud when they are older. As they get older if they no longer want to appear on it, I would stop showing them on here anyway.

As its got bigger they’ve been mentioned on brand campaigns and things, and as I’ve started doing more videos, I find it incredibly hard and unnatural to not say their names on camera. When our baby boy was born I can’t even begin to say how many messages I got asking his name and I felt like such a wally saying that I didn’t share them. So I’ve decided to say my children’s names on my about page. I still feel my original reasons still make sense, so I’m not going to freely write their names all over my blog constantly, but it just makes it so much easier to not have hide them anymore. I am just going to be more relaxed on here and social media, I still will probably avoid typing them if I can, and still not over use them so they don’t get picked up too much via Google. However any one can google my name so if someone really wanted to find them they could have done previously.

So ‘meet’ my babies- Madeleine, Charlotte (never called Charlotte, only Lottie) and Wren.

And there you have it. It’s just a minor refresh really, although it has taken us three nights solid work (why is everything so time consuming?!) to get it all done. I am really so pleased with it, this blog is essentially my fourth baby (so many babies!) and like most bloggers, I put my heart and soul into it. I love that my new look is more ‘me’ and I feel very grateful to Jon for helping me so much and supporting my passions. He is getting into taking photos and making videos much more, and I love that we have this shared passion that we share together.

If you see any glitches let me know, it’s impossible to check it on every device!
